My husband Sam introduced me to this soup with Marmite, a no-nonsense recipe
passed down by his father Pete. It has saved many a miserable Saturday afternoon with a side of cheese and Marmite on toast.
It’s so simple and quick to make. Sam likes the soup
quite thick, but if you prefer it thinner you can use more stock or just add some boiling water when you come to blend it.
Serves 6-8
20g butter
1 tbsp rapeseed oil or olive oil
1 large white onion, roughly chopped
1kg carrots, roughly chopped
1 potato, about 150g,
roughly cubed
handful of fresh sage leaves
1 tbsp Marmite
1.5 litres-2 litres vegetable stock
2 tbsp cream or crème fraîche (optional)
½ lemon
salt and pepper
Melt the butter in a large saucepan, add the oil and onion,
cover with a lid and cook over a low-medium heat for 10-15 minutes until soft
and translucent. Add the carrots and potato and cook for 10 minutes, stirring
occasionally, then add the sage and Marmite and stir to coat the vegetables.
Add the vegetable stock, put the lid back on and simmer for about 15 minutes until the carrots and potatoes are soft.
Add a good pinch of salt and grinding of pepper.
Leave to cool slightly, then add the cream, if using, to
give a more velvety texture.
Use a hand blender to whiz the soup until smooth, then season to taste with a squeeze of
lemon juice and some more pepper. Serve with Marmite and cheese on toast.

Matt Zarb-Cousin, of the Campaign for Fairer Gambling, said: ‘It’s an inadequate test.
Gambling addicts lie and they delude themselves, it’s all
part of the problem. They could easily lie their way through the test.
If a time-playing threshold is eight hours on six out of seven days then that is too high.
People could spend half that time playing and still
have a serious problem.’

Thai police swooped on the home of one of the
kingdom’s most high-profile officers on Monday as part of a series of raids targeting an illegal online gambling
network dubbed “Betflix”.
Most forms of betting are illegal in Thailand, with authorities striving recently to shut down the illicit
gambling sites, often foreign-owned, that have sprung up.
A sprawling investigation across six provinces saw SWAT teams raid some 30 locations — including
Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn’s central Bangkok house.
Surachate, well known in Thailand for his regular appearances in the media
giving updates on investigations, denied any involvement in the alleged gambling ring.
“I’m not worried at all, because I’m not involved in this and I can answer any question,”
he told reporters outside his home while the raid was under way.
Police Major General Trairong Phiwpan said the raids stemmed from a probe into a gambling website
called “Betflix” and 12 subsidiary sites.
Later Monday he told local media that of 23 suspects, 17 had been arrested,
including eight police officers.
Officers conducting the raid on Surachate’s house said they were unaware whose residence it was.
Known by the nickname “Big Joke” — for his seniority, not
his sense of humour — Surachate insisted the
search warrant for his home was “irregular” and hinted at
rivalries within the force.
“Today I see this as nothing more than internal politics within the police,” he said.
The raid comes only a few days before the selection of a new police chief, with Surachate
touted as a possible candidate.
The long-serving officer — nicknamed “the cat with nine lives”
— has been linked to powerful figures in the previous government.
He was appointed by ex-deputy prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan as chief of the
Immigration Bureau in September 2018.
He disappeared in 2019 over unclear reasons, before then-prime minister Prayut
Chan-o-cha made him a special adviser on strategy to police
in 2021.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who took office last month, told
reporters he was monitoring the situation.
“There may be the need to set up an independent investigation committee — because this is a big problem,” he said.
“It affects the morale and public impression towards the police.”
Thai police have long been dogged by allegations of endemic corruption.

The flawless West Coast Fever have continued their undefeated start to the Super Netball
season, triumphing over the Adelaide Thunderbirds 57-56 in a
nailbiter in Perth.
The Fever notched six of the first seven goals of the fourth quarter to snatch the game from the third-placed Thunderbirds on Saturday night.
But a late Thunderbirds fightback, with supershots from Georgie Horjus and Lucy
Austin, set up a blockbuster finish.
The Fever held on by a solitary point to become the last remaining
undefeated team after the Sunshine Coast Lightning beat the Melbourne Vixens earlier in round six.
Fever goalshooter Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard was immaculate, scoring 49 goals
from 49 attempts plus a supershot, while fellow Jamaican teammate
Kadie-Ann Dehaney ruled the defence, frustrating compatriots Romelda Aiken-George and Shamera Sterling-Humphrey.
“The Jamaicans are very competitive so we expected a really good game, but not to come away with a one-goal win,” Dehaney said after the match.
“But we’re grateful for the win.”
Despite conceding 10 intercepts, West Coast’s shooting gave them the edge.
The Fever started the game stronger, running out to a 14-12 lead
after the first quarter.
But the Thunderbirds dominated the second, scoring 16
points to 12 to take a lead into the main break.
“We were below standard, especially at the start with our work rate,” Dehaney said.
“We decided at halftime this is the line, when we get back out here we need to apply pressure, lift the standard of our work rate.”
Horjus was a stand-out for the Thunderbirds, amassing 20 goal assists on top of her three supershots to keep
her team in the contest.
The result sets up league-leading Fever for a blockbuster top-of-the-table clash with the Vixens
next weekend.
“Coming up against the Vixens is going to definitely be a hard game as well,” Dehaney said.
“They are a world-class team, they are very good, so it’s going to be a good encounter as well.”

As her ‘news report’ continues Simpson stands on Bayshore Boulevard while her ‘cameramen’ pelt her

After roaring ashore in Florida, the weakened Hurricane Helene quickly moved through Georgia, then soaked the
Carolinas and Tennessee with torrential rains that flooded creeks and rivers.

cleanup and recovery effort on Sunday after winds, rain and storm surges knocked
out power for millions, destroying roads and bridges in its path.
The devastation stretched along a string of east coast states as the storm killed at least 130
people in South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia with officials fearing even more bodies will be discovered.
